Solar-Biomass Hybrid Thermal Technology dem- onstration plant for Rural Electrification
Subcategory (under Clean Energy): Solar (Thermal)
Technology Readiness Level (TRL): TRL 5 - Large prototype
Technology Outline (Process Description)
Indigenous parabolic trough has been developed at a lower cost than imported one though at lower efficiency. While trade off between efficiency and the cost was necessary to develop the indigenous trough , it is necessary to see the trough per- formance under actual field conditions for the purpose of power generation in view of the insolation at various locations in the country The plant has been designed with multiple configuration options to run it as per the energy source available at site . Thermal heat and electricity are two major elements in the hybrid power plant and further studies. The project is a living test bed for experimenting with various solar technologies to optimize the performance. It enables to reduce viability gap through triggering development of low cost indigenous technologies in solar.
Salient Features/Advantages
- Medium temperature Solar Collectors.
- Medium temperature high efficiency Organic Rankine Cycle.
- Condensing cum back pressure turbine for operational flexibility.
- Indigenously built biomass based Combustion System to make power generation possible beyond solar hours.
- Integration of all the elements and power distribution system using remotely operable demand control mechanism.
Key Outcomes
- This is first of kind development in India on Solar-Biomass Hybrid for meeting the distributed energy needs for Rural population.
- Built at a scale of 250kWe using Indigenous developed, highly efficient & low cost Parabolic Trough based Concentrated Solar thermal Technology and integrating the same with higher efficient & compact Organic Rankine Cycle based Turbine Technology makes it a very unique design & further hybrid with biomass enables meeting the energy needs beyond Solar time which provide interests insights.
