National Centre of Excellence in Carbon Capture and Utilization (NCoE-CCU), IIT Bombay
Subcategory (under Clean Energy): CCU
Technology Readiness Level (TRL): TRL 4
Technology Outline (Process Description)
- Under the COE-CCU, formation of a specialized research facility dedicated to CCU research is envisaged, which will regulate and create multidisciplinary research projects on capture, transport, utilization, techno-economics, and cross- cutting aspects of CCU.
- Undertake high-impact, multi-disciplinary problem-driven research for end-to-end solutions by collecting and dissipating the knowledge on CCU in the larger context of low-carbon energy transitions and sustainable development in India. The centre will also work as a virtual hub of researchers from various institutes, industries and stakeholders to lead CCU research and development for climate change mitigation and enhanced energy security for India.
Salient Features/Advantages
Understanding every aspect of CCU involves successful amalgamation of multidisciplinary knowledge. Acting as a hub, the CoE will facilitate experts and budding researchers of diverse fields of study to identify and solve research gaps in the field of CCU together.
Key Outcomes
- A water-based CO2 capture technology has been developed with the strategic use of a bio-inspired catalyst.
- Establishment of a 40.0 kg per day CO2 capture pilot prototype.
- Development in progress for a 1.0 ton per day (TPD) CO2 capture pilot plant.
- Engagement with multiple industries (responsible for significant CO2 emission as point sources) and realizing their carbon footprint and developing prospective solutions for them.
