Development of portable direct methanol fuel cell power generator with bi-functional catalysts-coat- ed hydrocarbon membranes

Subcategory (under Clean Energy): Hydrogen
Technology Readiness Level (TRL): TRL 2 - Application formulated
Technology Outline (Process Description)

The development of portable air-cathode direct methanol fuel cell power generator with the technical targets of: (i) catalyst-loading of < 0.15 gkW-1 at >65% efficiency (ii)power generation of 30 W, (iii) 10000 hours of lifetime,(iv) a voltage degradation of < 10 µVhour-1, and (v) power generation cost of Rs.0.017 Wh-1 is under progress.

Salient Features/Advantages

  • The power generation cost of Lightweight portable DMFC power generator is Rs.0.017 Wh-1. The power generation cost of final product is comparable to the existing national and international levels and the well executed systematic methodology of this project will aid to accomplish the targets with international standards.

Key Outcomes

  • Established materials chemistry da- tabase for (a) catalytically active nano- structures and (b) porous nanocomposite membranes
  • Catalyst coated membranes were Fabricated
