Bench scale design and development: Investigation of high frequency, high intensity ultrasonic for carbon rich solvent regeneration in solvent-based post combustion CO2 capture process PCCC for reducing CO2 capture energy demand
Subcategory (under Clean Energy): CCU
Technology Readiness Level (TRL): TRL 2-3
Technology Outline (Process Description)
To overcome the thermal degradation and solvent loss issues and minimize energy demand, one method for PCCC cost savings has emerged: sono-assisted solvent regeneration/ CO2 stripping. The ultra-low temperature sono-assisted CO2 stripping/ solvent regeneration to avoid solvent degradation using tank-type (bath-type) sonication and it provides a more uniform distribution of energy throughout the system, leading to better performance and scalable potential.
Salient Features/Advantages
CO2 stripping at the low temperature set point of 6°C and 12°C is found to be promising in all frequencies, indicating that CO2 stripping is primarily promoted by sonication, rather than by temperature. In addition, enhancing the high- frequency ultrasound-assisted aqueous carbon-rich 30 wt% monoethanolamine (MEA) solvent regeneration/ CO2 stripping process using Fe2O3 hydrophobic particles was investigated.
Key Outcomes
Designed and developed Bench Scale Unit for Conventional CO2 Capture for sono-assisted solvent regeneration/ CO2 stripping process. This technology can be retrofitted with existing solvent-based post combustion CO2 capture plants.
