Cascaded Latent Heat Storage (CLHS) for hightemperature CSP applications material development and characterization to lab-scale setup
Subcategory (under Clean Energy): Cross Cutting
Technology Readiness Level (TRL): TRL 4 - Early prototype
Technology Outline (Process Description)
The present research is attributed to the cascaded latent heat storage (CLHS) concept to ensure the maximization of thermal energy storage in the form of latent heat while optimizing the best utilization of the phase change material (PCM). The major objective of cascading is to select and arrange suitable PCMs with different melting points andlatent heat from the existing pool of commonlyavailable PCMs so that fast chargingcan be attained while ensuring maximum thermal energy storage in the form of latent heat. Therefore, this study will experimentallyandnumerically analyzethe optimization of the maximum utilization of latent heat from the PCM. A novel multi-pass shell and tube-typeheat exchanger is designed for latent heat storage with dimensions400*337.2*337.2mm3 with 100 pipes so the total pipe length is 40m excluding the bends. Our key achievements are the novel heat exchanger unit, high temp material development, and working lab-scale setup for the different applications with cascaded latent heat energy storage.
