Mission Innovation-Overview
Mission Innovation (MI) is a global initiative of 23 countries including India, and the European Commission (on behalf of the European Union). This initiative is catalysing a decade of action and investment in research, development and demonstration to make clean energy affordable, attractive and accessible for all. This will accelerate progress towards the Paris Agreement goals and pathways to net zero. The Innovation Platform is made up of three modules, INSIGHTS, COLLABORATE and ACCELERATE. Initiatives are led and supported by the MI Secretariat and MI members and focus strengthening the global clean energy innovation ecosystem and help maximise the impact of investments.
The announcement of Mission Innovation (MI) at COP21 took place on November 30, 2015, the Indian PM Mr. Narendra Modi (Coined “Mission Innovation’ term), alongside the world leaders gathered in Paris, to commit to ambitious efforts to combat climate change. The early goal was to accelerate the pace of clean energy innovation to achieve performance breakthroughs and cost reductions to provide widely affordable and reliable clean energy solutions.

In MI’s first phase (2015-2020), India was the founding member of MI and led three MI challenges like Smart Grids, Off Grid Access to Electricity, and Sustainable fuels, also actively participated in five MI challenges including carbon capture, converting sunlight, clean energy materials, affordable heating and cooling of buildings, renewable and clean hydrogen. Moreover, the announcement of funding opportunity in the innovation challenge areas and financial and technical contribution to the Global Cooling Prize had been made
