Climate, Energy, and Sustainable Technology (CEST)

The Department of Science and Technology (DST) serves as the nodal agency for Mission Innovation (MI) in India, coordinating national efforts to demonstrate and provide access to clean energy solutions. The Climate, Energy, and Sustainable Technology (CEST) division in DST is driving pioneering research, development, and demonstration initiatives across the entire energy value chain.

The division’s focus spans climate change mitigation, solar energy, energy storage, hydrogen technologies, clean coal solutions, alternative fuels, electric mobility, smart grids, building energy efficiency, sustainable cooling, and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS).

Under Mission Innovation 2.0, DST has designated The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) as the secretariat, recognizing its expertise in energy science and its collaborative work with diverse stakeholders nationwide over the past five decades. TERI is built on core areas of policy research, innovation, capacity building, and knowledge dissemination. Aligned with Mission Innovation’s goals, CEST and TERI are fostering an ecosystem of innovation and collaboration by enhancing R&D capabilities, supporting public-private partnerships, promoting technology transfer, and accelerating the deployment of sustainable energy technologies. Together, they aim to drive transformative change, contributing to global climate targets and advancing India’s transition to a clean and sustainable energy future.
