Development of a solar-thermal-steam based sterilization system for dental tool sterilizations in remote areas
Subcategory (under Clean Energy): Solar (Thermal)
Technology Readiness Level (TRL): TRL 4 - Early prototype
Technology Outline (Process Description)
Most of the surgical treatment needed to humans across the globe may be met at the primary level of healthcare, which is often provided by rural clinics different parts of the world. More than 3 billion people worldwide are getting benefitted from the rural health clinic facility, but more than half of them do not have access to water & electricity leading to improper sterilization and post treatment infections The safe sterilization of surgical instruments and other medical tools are important aspects in the health care sector. Sterilization involves cleaning, disinfecting the previously used contaminated surgical tools before the next use. Steam sterilization is one of the best disinfecting solutions. It is inexpensive but requires water and electricity for its in-situ generation. Portable steam storage canister can have great contribution by facilitating minor surgery in the developing world by sterilizing surgical instruments and combating infections in rural areas. The portable canister is developed with multi-layer insulation which can retain useful heat of steam, generated via solar plants for longer duration thus making it as viable option for sterilizing equipments in remote areas.
Salient Features/Advantages
- Portable and compact steam storage cylinder is developed for sterilizing dental equipment in remote areas.
- Multi-layer insulation aided with vacuum layer is incorporated for retaining useful heat for more than 7 hrs.
- Exothermic capsule is integrated to increase the efficiency of the steam storage cylinder.
- Can aid in capturing the unused steam and re use for potential application in medical, agriculture, etc.
- No external heating source is involved.
Key Outcomes
- Portable and compact steam storage cylinder is developed for sterilizing dental equipment in remote areas.
- Design, fabrication and testing of a portable compact cylinder with multilayer insulations for storing steam at pre-defined conditions (pressure, temperature) for a maximum time.
- Design fabrication and testing of a desktop style sterilization canister that can perform flash sterilization in less than 6min of up to 10 medical instruments placed inside it.
