Design and Development of Cost efficient solar Receiver Tube for Medium and High Temperature Solar Thermal Application
Subcategory (under Clean Energy): Solar (Thermal)
Technology Readiness Level (TRL): TRL 8 - First of a kind commercial
Technology Outline (Process Description)
Solar absorber tube (receiver) is one of the key components for solar water heater and concentrated solar thermal (CST) based industrial process heat applications. In this regard, the Centre for Solar Energy Materials, ARCI, Hyderabad has developed a cost-efficient solar absorber tubes with high optical, thermal and weather stabilities suitable for medium and high temperature industrial process heat applications under DST-SERI projects entitled “Design and Development of Cost efficient solar Receiver Tube for Medium and High Temperature Solar Thermal Application”. Moreover, the receiver tubes validated for both the solar water heater and industrial process heat applications achieved high performance in heat gain with low heat loss property on par with commercial receiver tubes. This technology has been successfully transferred to Greenera Energy India, Pvt. Ltd. Technology transfer to other interested industries is being progressed.
Salient Features/Advantages
- High selective properties (Solar absorptance ~93-95%; Spectral emittance (0.14 to 16).
- Low heat loss property: ~0.14-0.17 at 250-500 °C.
- Temperature stability: medium temperature absorber tube: < 300°C; high temperature absorber tube: < 500°C.
- High corrosion resistance > 500 hrs withstand in salt spray test (ASTM B117).
- Cost-effective & Easy Scalable
Key Outcomes
- Prototype receiver tubes (1m) and receiver assemblies (2m) with high optical absorptance (93-95%) and low emittance (0.14) have been successfully developed for field validation.
- Validated for both the solar water heater and industrial process heat application achieved high performance in heat gain with low heat loss property.
- The technology has been successfully transferred to an Indian Industry (Greenera Energy India, Pvt. Ltd) and transfer to other interested industries is also being processed.
