Maximum Solar PV Penetration Assessment Tool

Subcategory (under Clean Energy): Solar (PV)
Technology Readiness Level (TRL): TRL 3 - Concept needs validation
Technology Outline (Process Description)

Variable, intermittent, and non-synchronous nature of PV power generation introduces several technical.

Such technical issues often limit the amount of non-synchronous instantaneous power that can be securely accommodated by a grid.

It is essential to estimate the maximum secure PV penetration level for a given unit commitment

A new tool is developed to estimate the maximum Solar PV penetration level in an existing power system infrastructure ensuring the system’s stability and security.

Stage 1 of tool: Frequency nadir and RoCoF thresholds of the system are used to determine the maximum PV penetration level.

Stage 2 of tool: Voltage Severity Index used to assess voltage security of the system determines maximum PV penetration level. Using the tool, the system operator can decide the maximum PV penetration level for a given generation mix of power systems.

Salient Features/Advantages

  • Easy to
  • Fast and reliable
  • High estimation accuracy

Key Outcomes

  • Trial Application in Real Power Systems: Using the developed tool, the maximum permissible solar PV penetration level for Gujarat, a Renewable Energy-rich state in India, is assessed to be 53 % *

*For a specific operational scenario of the Gujarat Grid
