Mission Innovation
Mission Innovation (MI) was launched during COP21 in Paris in November 2015, with a commitment to pursuing ambitious efforts to combat climate change. MI is a global initiative dedicated to driving a decade of action and investment in research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) to make clean energy affordable, appealing, and accessible to everyone. The term “Mission Innovation” was coined by Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. This initiative brings together 23 countries and the European Commission (representing the European Union) to accelerate the clean energy revolution, supporting the goals of the Paris Agreement and advancing pathways toward net-zero emissions.
MI Member Countries

Mission Innovation Collaborators
The IEA is at the heart of global dialogue on energy, providing authoritative analysis, data, policy recommendations, and real-world solutions to help countries provide secure and sustainable energy for all. The IEA was created in 1974 to help co-ordinate a collective response to major disruptions in the supply of oil. While oil security remains a key aspect of our work, the IEA has evolved and expanded significantly since its foundation.
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is a lead global intergovernmental agency for energy transformation that serves as the principal platform for international cooperation, supports countries in their energy transitions, and provides state of the art data and analyses on technology, innovation, policy, finance and investment.
The World Economic Forum is the International Organization for Public-Private Cooperation. It provides a global, impartial and not-for-profit platform for meaningful connection between stakeholders to establish trust, and build initiatives for cooperation and progress.
The World Bank Group (WBG) is a leading global financier of renewable energy and energy efficiency projects in developing nations. Partnering with the Mission Innovation (MI) initiative, the WBG aim to accelerate clean energy innovation through collaboration, knowledge sharing, and communication. A key initiative is the Energy Storage Partnership (ESP), which focuses on developing energy storage solutions for developing countries.
The Mission Possible Partnership is an ambitious effort to trigger a net-zero transformation of seven industrial sectors, leveraging the convening power, talent and expertise of world-leading organizations on climate action.
The Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM) is a global network of over 9,200 cities committed to combating climate change and building resilient, low-carbon communities. GCoM empowers cities to take ambitious climate action by fostering partnerships, sharing knowledge, and mobilizing resources. Through initiatives like Innovate4cities, GCoM prioritizes data, technology, and innovation to drive sustainable urban development.
The EIB Group, consisting of the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Investment Fund (EIF), has joined Mission Innovation by signing a Statement of Intent at the COP 28 in Dubai in December 2023.
Breakthrough Energy is a network of entities and initiatives, including investment funds, nonprofit and philanthropic programs, and policy efforts linked by a common commitment to scale the technologies we need to achieve a path to net zero emissions by 2050.
